Best Universities in the UK for Indian Students, Ranked by QS 2027

Four UK universities sit in the QS top 10 for 2027, and all nine we list are Russell Group members. But rank is not the whole story: Oxford is 4th in QS and 1st in a different ranking. Here is the ranked list, what each number means, and what to check before you apply.

The short answer: Imperial, Oxford, Cambridge and UCL are the UK's four in the global top 10
In the QS World University Rankings 2027, four UK universities sit in the global top 10: Imperial College London at 2nd, Oxford at 4th, Cambridge at 6th and UCL at equal 8th. After them come Edinburgh at 35th, King's College London at 37th, Manchester at 40th, Bristol at 57th and Warwick at 68th. All nine are members of the Russell Group, the association of 24 UK universities.
These are the positions each university reports from the 2027 table, which QS published in June 2026, apart from Oxford, whose overall position comes from QS's own profile page. QS ranked 1,504 universities this year, so even the lowest university in this list is in the top 5% of the table.

Why a university can be 4th in one ranking and 1st in another
Rankings are not one fact. Oxford is 4th in the QS World University Rankings 2027, yet Oxford's own announcement says it has been named the best university in the world for a record 11th year in a row by the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings 2027. Both are real, because the two publishers weight things differently.
So when a guide says a university is 'the best', ask which ranking it means and which year. This article uses QS 2027 throughout, so the numbers above are comparable to each other, but they are not a judgement that Imperial is better than Oxford for your course.
What a world rank does not tell you
A world rank is for the whole university. It does not tell you the fees for your course, the entry requirements for your degree, or how strong your specific subject is. Subject strength can differ sharply from the overall number. LSE, for example, says it has been ranked in the top three in the UK and fifth in the world for Social Science and Management in the QS subject rankings 2026, which is a different table from the overall list above. We have not given LSE an overall QS 2027 position here because we could not confirm it from LSE's own pages.
Oxford shows the same effect. Its own announcement says it was top in the world in four QS subject rankings in 2026: Anatomy and Physiology, Anthropology, Geography and Modern Languages. For a shortlist, look up the subject ranking for your course, not just the overall rank.
What happens after you graduate: the Graduate visa
A UK degree lets you apply for the Graduate visa, which lets you stay and work after your course. On GOV.UK, the length depends on when you apply: 2 years if you apply on or before 31 December 2026, and 18 months if you apply on or after 1 January 2027. A PhD or other doctoral qualification gets 3 years. The application fee is £937, and the healthcare surcharge is £1,035 for each year you will be in the UK.
While you study, the rules let you work part-time. On a full-time degree-level course at a higher education provider with a track record of compliance, Appendix Student of the Immigration Rules allows up to 20 hours a week in term time and full-time work outside term. We cover that in detail in our guide to part-time jobs in the UK.
How to turn this list into a shortlist
Start from your course, not the ranking. Find the course page on each university's own site and read its entry requirements for Indian degrees, its fees for international students, and its English-language requirement, because these differ by course and by year. Then compare the subject ranking for that course, and only then use the overall QS rank as a tie-breaker.
Do not assume a higher rank means an easier or better admission for you. A top-10 university can be the right choice for one course and a poor fit for another. Our guides to UK course fees, the Student visa and IELTS alternatives cover the next steps once you have a shortlist.
The honest bottom line
If rank is your main filter, the four UK universities in the QS top 10 are Imperial, Oxford, Cambridge and UCL, and Edinburgh, King's, Manchester, Bristol and Warwick follow in the top 70. But the number that matters most is your course, your fees and your entry route, so use the table to find candidates and the university's own pages to decide.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which is the best university in the UK for Indian students?
There is no single answer, because it depends on your course. By the QS World University Rankings 2027, Imperial College London is the highest-placed UK university at 2nd in the world, followed by Oxford at 4th, Cambridge at 6th and UCL at equal 8th. Check the subject ranking for your course too.
How many UK universities are in the QS world top 10 for 2027?
Four: Imperial College London (2nd), the University of Oxford (4th), the University of Cambridge (6th) and UCL (equal 8th), based on each university's reported QS 2027 position.
Is Oxford ranked first in the world?
It depends on the ranking. Oxford is 4th in the QS World University Rankings 2027. Oxford's own announcement says the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2027 named it the best university in the world for an 11th year in a row. They are different rankings with different methods.
What is the Russell Group?
The Russell Group is an association of 24 UK universities, including Oxford, Cambridge, Imperial, UCL, Edinburgh, King's College London, Manchester, Bristol and Warwick. All nine universities in this ranked list are members.
What QS rank is the University of Edinburgh in 2027?
Edinburgh is 35th in the QS World University Rankings 2027, according to its own materials, which also describe it as one of the top 50 universities worldwide.
Can I work in the UK after studying at a top university?
You can apply for the Graduate visa. On GOV.UK it lasts 2 years if you apply on or before 31 December 2026, 18 months if you apply on or after 1 January 2027, and 3 years for a PhD or other doctoral qualification. The fee is £937 plus a healthcare surcharge of £1,035 for each year.
Can I work while studying at a UK university?
Yes. On a full-time degree-level course at a higher education provider with a track record of compliance, you can work up to 20 hours a week in term time and full-time outside term time, under Appendix Student of the Immigration Rules. Part-time study allows no employment.
Does a higher QS rank mean I will get a better job?
Not automatically. A world rank describes the whole university, not your course or your outcome. Look at the subject ranking, the fees and the entry requirements for your own course before treating the overall rank as a guide.
