January 2027: The UK's Real Second Intake, Not a Fallback

The old assumption was that January intake meant fewer courses, weaker cohorts, and universities using it to fill leftover places. That's no longer an accurate picture. Some universities now run more than 90 postgraduate courses through January alone; others run several dozen across STEM and business subjects specifically.

Across UK higher education as a whole, well over 40 institutions offer a January-start postgraduate route in Accounting & Finance, and more than 50 in Business & Management, spanning both Russell Group universities and specialist post-92 institutions. This isn't a side door. It's a parallel front door that happens to open a few months later.

The degree itself doesn't change: a January-start master's leads to the same qualification as a September one. What does change is the shape of the course catalogue. January intake skews heavily toward STEM and business, with data science, computer science, engineering, finance and management dominating, while the fuller humanities and arts catalogue is largely reserved for September.

If your subject sits in that STEM and business band, January is close to a like-for-like alternative. If it doesn't, September may simply be the only real option.

Some of the Russell Group's most selective master's start only in September, but several members run a substantial January catalogue, concentrated in business, finance, computer and data science, law, and engineering. The course names below come from each university's own January 2027 page.

This is a curated selection weighted toward the business, data, finance, law and engineering subjects where January choice is deepest. It is not a popularity ranking.

It varies. Some universities publish a hard international deadline for January, such as Liverpool's 18 December 2026, or 30 November 2026 for a few engineering and physics courses. Others use rolling admissions, offering places as strong applications arrive and closing popular courses early once they fill.

Either way, applying as soon as your documents are ready beats waiting, and each shortlisted university's own current-year page is the only reliable source for its date.

Maintenance funds are rising before most January 2027 visa applications will be submitted. From 30 November 2026, the UK's required maintenance figure rises to £1,570 a month in London and £1,203 a month outside it, up from £1,529 and £1,171. Since a January 2027 CAS-linked visa application will almost certainly land after that date, budget to the new figures, not the ones still quoted in older guides.

Choose January if your subject is STEM or business, you missed the September cycle, and you'd rather start sooner than wait a further nine months.

Choose September if your subject sits outside that STEM and business band, since the course catalogue is deeper and more established for that cycle.

Either way, apply early. Whether the university sets a hard date or admits on a rolling basis, earlier is safer.
