IELTS Score Validity: How Long It Actually Lasts, and What Changes That

IELTS test results are valid for 2 years from your test date, not your results date. That much is widely known. What's far less widely known: this isn't a fixed rule set by IELTS itself — it's a recommendation. IELTS's own research, based on how second-language ability naturally fades over time ("second language attrition"), recommends 2 years as a sensible cutoff, but each receiving organisation — a university, a visa authority, an employer — sets its own actual policy.

In practice, almost everyone follows the 2-year recommendation, which is why it functions as a de facto rule. But it means two things worth knowing: some organisations do accept longer, and IELTS itself notes that a Test Report Form older than 2 years can sometimes still be accepted if you can show you've actively maintained or improved your English since — worth asking about directly if you're sitting on an older score rather than assuming you must retake.

This is the detail that catches students out. Your IELTS score isn't checked once, at submission — it's checked again whenever the receiving organisation actually assesses your file, and for a university, that assessment point is commonly enrolment (September/October intake), not the date you applied months earlier.

Concretely: if you submit your application in January with a score that's 22 months old, and your course starts in September, your score will be 26+ months old by enrolment — past the 2-year window, even though it was well within it when you applied. This is exactly why UK universities and UKVI specifically flag that scores need to remain valid through enrolment, not just through application. Time your test around your intake date, not your application deadline.
